Baby green summer, gold summer, zucchini, French haricot bean, and yellow wax beans are all very reasonably priced now; prices will rise as we get closer to the holidays. Figs are still available but cold weather may cause them to stop at any time … |
Stone
Fruit: Chilean peaches are getting bigger but are still small and hard; better size, quality, and prices are a couple of weeks out. Chilean Apricots and Cherries are very nice; Rainier Cherries are here too; quality is excellent. Chilean plums and Nectarines are here... |
Tomato
Report: Tomato prices overall arefirming up and especially on Roma tomatoes; quality is very good. Grape Tomatoes: Prices are down and product is more readily available. Cherry Tomatoes: Good fruit is very short; prices are up significantly. Heirloom Tomatoes: Fruit is short; quality is poor; prices are high. Cluster tomatoes are abundant; prices are low.... |
Lettuce
Report: Iceberg and leaf growers are trying to prop up the market but so far there are still deals available; quality is good and prices are unchanged; Baby arrugula is suffering from cool weather in the new fields; quality is not very good.... |
Berry
News: New crop Strawberries are a week or so away and rain is forecast in the Northern fields; quality and price will be dictated by the weather. Blackberries and Raspberries are less expensive; quality is good. Argentinean Blueberries are good; prices are unchanged.... |
Fruit
Report: Apples: We still have small supplies of locally grown heirloom apples available; varieties include Baldwin, Hawkeye, Jonagold and Spitzenberg. Avocados: Mexican fruit continues to be very good; prices are unchanged. Citrus: Texas Grapefruit and Valencia orange quality remains excellent; Lemons are up and Limes are unchanged; California Navel growers are concerned about sub freezing temperatures; prices are once again in the hands of Mother Nature. Grapes: Chilean fruit is at least a week away; California fruit quality is still strong. Cantaloupes continue to be short; prices are high; Small Honeydews are tight; quality and price is better on larger fruit. Watermelon prices are down. Maui Pineapples are still having problems; Costa Rica has better quality lower priced fruit now..... |
| Vegetable
Report: Artichokes: Supplies are short and prices are up. Asparagus: Prices are taking off; Mexican grass is almost finished and Peruvian grass is having problems getting space on the airlines because of heavy holiday passenger and mail traffic. Blue Lake Beans: Quality is good; prices are off. Broccoli: Prices are low; product is plentiful. Cauliflower: Supply is limited; prices are heading up. Celery: Prices are unchanged. Cabbage: Green Cabbage is off; Red is unchanged. Carrots: No change in prices. Cucumbers: Quality is good; prices are low; Hothouse cucumbers are cheap too; quality is good. Eggplant: Prices are unchanged. Onions: Brown, red, and white onions prices are low. Peppers: Green remains low; Red and Gold are unchanged. Zucchini: Product is in good supply; quality is good and prices are low. Coachella and Mexican Gold Zucchini are good; prices are low. Straightneck quality is excellent; prices are unchanged. |
