LETTUCE MARKET:
Spinach, Boston, Romaine,
Greenleaf, Redleaf and Iceberg:
Cold weather is causing prices to perk up some;
overall prices are quite moderate…

BERRY NEWS: Strawberries: Quality
is improving; cold weather is causing some white
shoulders but not too bad. Long Stem
Strawberries: Prices are unchanged.
Raspberries: Supply is still
short; prices are firm on Driscoll label. Blueberries
and Blackberries: Supplies
are good; prices are still low…

TOMATO
UPDATE: Two Layer Repack
Tomatoes and Loose Tomatoes:
Prices and supplies are steady for the upcoming
week. Cherry Tomatoes: Prices are
unchanged. Roma Tomatoes: Supply
is light; growers have hiked fob prices; the market
is reacting immediately as local supplies are short.
Grape Tomatoes: Good deals on conventional
clamshells; Del Cabo organic sugar plum grapes are
now only slightly higher. Teardrops: Supplies
are still short; prices remain high. Heirloom
Tomatoes: Mixed heirlooms are still available;
quality is good and prices remain unchanged… |
FRESH
FRUITS: Apricots:
Supplies are short as the season dwindles down;
only single layer fruit is available at premium
prices. California Haas Avocados:
Prices are steady; quality is good. Cantaloupes:
Supply will tighten up; rain in the fields will
curtail harvest; prices will be going up. Honeydews:
Supply of large fruit is light; prices remain firm.
Watermelon: Quality is still not
very good; prices are still high. Green
and Red Grapes: Chilean flames
and Thompson seedless are going strong. Oranges:
Texas Valencia’s are excellent for juicing;
California navels are best for garnish. Grapefruit:
Texas Rio stars are still very good. Limes:
Mexican limes are still short due to rain; prices
are high especially on large fruit. Hawaiian
Papayas: Supplies are good; prices are
unchanged. Nectarines and Peaches:
Chilean stone fruit quality is good and prices are
unchanged; white flesh peaches and nectarines are
also available; quality is excellent. Pomegranates:
The season is about over; we will finish early this
week and should be out until September. Plums:
Both red and black are in the market; sweet prune,
green gage plums, and lemon plums are available
too but fading fast. There are good supplies of
Apples, Kiwi’s, Mangoes, and Pears

VEGETABLES: Artichokes:
Castroville chokes are improving from their frost
damage; not much change in prices. Asparagus:
Cool temperatures and supermarket ads
will firm this market up. Bok Choy
and Napa Cabbage: Supplies are
good; prices have leveled off. Blue Lake
Beans: Supplies are light; prices are
up. Broccoli: Shippers are going
out of 4 districts; supplies are long; prices
are low. Cauliflower: Prices
are off but are still a little high. Cabbage:
Green is up heading towards Saint Patrick’s
Day; red is unchanged. Celery:
Prices are edging up. Cucumbers:
Supplies are better; prices are level. Eggplant:
No change; prices are low. Red Onions:
No change in prices. Yellow Onions:
No changes to report. White Onions:
Prices are unchanged. Kale, Curly Parsley
and Italian Parsley:
Supplies are good; prices are unchanged. Green
Bell Peppers: Green bells are reasonably
priced. Red Peppers: Supply is
much improved this week; prices are low. Gold
Bell Peppers: Supplies have loosened
up; prices are down. Squash: Gold Zucchini:
Small numbers are available but not enough
to meet demand; we are still suggesting straightneck.
Yellow Straightneck: Prices have
leveled off; supplies are good. Green
Zucchini: Prices have leveled off but
we are expecting increases later in the week.
French Haricot Vert Beans: Prices
remain about the same. Yellow Wax Beans:
Prices are still strong this week. Baby
Squashes: Still short but green zucchini
is your best value. There are good supplies of
Chard, Carrots, China Peas, Hard Squashes,
Sweet Potatoes, and Yams...
