In Season Right Now: Minneolas, Romanesco, Black Arkansas, Gold Kiwi, Asian Pears, Black Radish, Comice Pears, Celery Root, D’Angou Pears, Mandarins, Black Garlic, Pummelos.

Item of the Week: Item #0473, Blue Cheese Crumbles.

Tomato Report: Tomato production in Mexico is increasing, and prices are starting to come down on round slicing tomatoes. Roma tomatoes are a great buy and quality is great this week. The market remains firm for grape tomatoes.

Lettuce Report: Despite the recent rains we have had; the quality for Iceberg, Romaine, and Leaf lettuce are okay. The key is to buy fresh cut (which we do) and not storage product. Pricing is fair and quality is fine. We will monitor the product closely.

Berry News: Pricing has come down and quality is improved for strawberries this week. We feel that this is a temporary situation, and there is a concern that there will be inconsistent supply of strawberries starting next week. There will be a high variance of sizing on strawberries therefore there will not be a good supply of stem strawberries for Valentine Day. Raspberries supplies in Mexico have increased slightly, while the blackberry supplies were affected by the high winds. Chilean blueberries are in good supply (check out this week’s Hot Sheet special)

Fruit Report: Honeydew Melon from Central America is in good supply, and quality is excellent. Cantaloupe availability on smaller size (15’s & 18’s) will hopefully improve this week. Pineapple from Central America is in good supply. Lime production is improving this week. Murcott mandarins, pummelos, blood oranges, Oro Blancos, and Minneola tangelos are available. Bartlett, Bosc, and D’Anjou pears availability has improved this week. Due to the weather the harvest for Callifornia Hass avocados has been disrupted. We think we are still a few weeks away from a good California avocados. Mexican Hass avocados are in good supply. There is still no improvement on the availability of small lemons. California kiwi is in good supply. Prices are coming down significantly for Chilean Flame, Thompson, and Sugarone seedless grapes. Watermelons are in very tight supply.

Vegetable Report: Mexican cucumbers are in good supply out of Nogales. Production levels are okay for green bell peppers coming out of Nogales. Red and yellow bell pepper production has improved and prices are coming down. Zucchini is in good supply, while yellow squash is in tight supply. Green beans are in limited supply and at extremely high price. Good supplies of eggplant out of Nogales. Celery market continues to be on the rise due to the heavy rain in Oxnard and the freeze in Florida. Carrot availability is steady, as well as, prices. Spring Mix, arrugula, and baby spinach are in good supply. Asparagus production is on the rise in the coastal districts, which will result in prices starting to trend downward and quality to improve.

As with all fresh fruits and vegetables, the market could change daily . . .
