PDF Version of this Document

In Season Right Now: Lady Apples, Passion Fruit, Comice Pears, Black Radish, Forelli Pears, Celery Root, D’Angou Pears, Rambutan, Black Garlic, Pomegranate, Romano Beans, Persimmons, Pummelos, Rambutan.

New Item: Fig Cake -- dense fig fruit mixed with Spanish marcona almonds pressed and dried into semi sweet sliceable bread. Great for cheese plate.

Tomato Report: Romas are in good supply in Southern California and Nogales. Round slicing tomatoes are continuing to trend lower. Prices have started to trend downward for cherry and grape tomatoes in California and Florida.

Lettuce Report: Markets have become very active for iceberg, romaine and leaf lettuces. Cool weather has slowed iceberg growth in the San Joaquin Valley (Huron); ice in the field has delayed harvesting of leaf items in the Salinas Valley. Romaine yields have dropped as the result of quality issues caused by colder weather conditions. The processing industry is experiencing a significant shortage on romaine, driving the market higher. Romaine will be in extreme short supply through at least early November

Berry News: Strawberries are expected to be extremely tight supply and at high prices throughout November. Raspberry availability is increasing, due to multiple growing areas in production, such as Oxnard, Baja California and Central Mexico. Blackberry supplies are also increasing, with the proprietary Driscoll premium variety now being harvested in Central Mexico. Blueberry production in Argentina is slowly increasing. Prices remain high.

Fruit Report: We continue to have both Chilean and Mexican avocados available; however Mexican avocados are a better choice. Do not hold Mexican avocados too long because they will turn black. New crop Navel oranges are in better supply this week, particularly for the larger sizes. Lemons are in good supply, with production being done out of the desert districts of Southern California and Western Arizona. New crop pummelos are now available in California, along with Fairchild tangerines and Satsuma mandarins. The lime harvest is in full production in Mexico. Due to cooler weather conditions in Central and Western Arizona growers are anticipating lighter production on large size cantaloupe this week. Honeydews continue with good supplies coming out of Nogales. Late season plums are still available

Vegetable Report: Bunched broccoli, broccoli crowns, and cauliflower are trending higher in price due to reduced production caused by cold weather. Recent cool weather in California has resulted in smaller than normal size in the carrots at the field level; production has dropped on jumbo carrots, and prices have firmed. Prices have firmed for new crop asparagus, with light supplies coming from Mexico, Baja California and Oregon. Tight supplies continue on napa and curly parsley. The market is firm for new crop green bell peppers in Coachella, red bells are also available in Oxnard and Coachella. Good supplies on eggplant in Coachella and Georgia. Green onions, coming from Mexicali, are in plentiful supply, and quality is excellent.

As with all fresh fruits and vegetables, the market could change daily . . .
