New Item: Fig Cake -- dense fig fruit mixed with Spanish marcona almonds pressed and dried into semi sweet sliceable bread. Great for cheese plate.
|
Tomato
Report: Roma tomatoes pricing continues to trend downward with production starting from Nogales. Round slicing tomatoes continue to trend upward in price. Prices continue to remain firm for cherry and grape tomatoes. |
|
Lettuce
Report: We are now transitioning from Salinas Valley to San Joaquin Valley (Huron district). Quality is good but product weight is light. Iceberg has started to ship out of Huron. The romaine and leaf harvest will continue through mid-November. Quality for this late season product is fair, due to issues caused by heavy rainfall that occurred last week, followed by continuing humid weather conditions.
|
Berry
News: California strawberries continueto be in very short supply, following the unseasonable rain that occurred last week. Raspberry and blackberries availability has improved. Cold weather in Argentina has delayed the start of the blueberry harvest. Don’t’ buy blueberries; quality is down and pricing is in $70 range. By early November, blueberries should be in full production coming out of Argentina and Chile. |
Fruit
Report: We continue to have both Chilean and Mexican avocados available; however Mexican avocados are a better choice; however do not hold Mexican avocados too long. The season has finished for California Valencia oranges. Lemons are in good supply for most sizes, with fair availability for the larger sizes (95s & larger). New crop pummelos are now available in California, along with Fairchild tangerines and Satsuma mandarins. The citrus harvest is in full swing in Florida, including Navels, juice oranges, grapefruit and tangerines; however dry weather conditions have caused a reduction in yield and fruit has not achieved full color. The lime harvest is in full production in Mexico and prices are a good buy. Cantaloupes and Honeydews are in good supply. Bartlett, D’Anjou and Bosc are now available out of California and Washington. |
Vegetable
Report: Bunched broccoli and broccoli crowns have started to increase production while Cauliflower is still in tight supply. Celery continues to trend higher and is expected to remain high through Thanksgiving. Green onions from Mexico are in good supply, along with green & red cabbage, snow peas, bok choy, kale and Italian parsley. Curly parsley, cilantro, and napa cabbage are in extremely tight supply and prices remain high. New crop green bell peppers are now available in the Coachella Valley of California. Eggplant is available out of Coachella; prices are firm and supplies are good. The market is flat on Idaho Russet potatoes. Asparagus production is coming out of Peru and supplies are good. |
As with
all fresh fruits and vegetables, the market could change
daily . . .
