PDF Version of this Document

In Season Right Now: Indian Eggplant, White Peach, Mangosteen, Tuscan Melon, Apricots, Galia Melon, Black Plums, Persian Melon, Donut Peaches, Pomegranate, Romano Beans, Brown Figs.

Locally Grown: #5637, Andy Boy Colossal Romaine Hearts.

Tomato Report: The market on Roma tomatoes continues to trend higher for prices due to fewer acres planted in California. Round tomatoes are in better supply and prices are continuing to come down. Grape and cherry tomatoes continue to be in good supply and at a great buy.

Lettuce Report: Due to the recent warm weather, lettuces have not had any significant quality issues. Iceberg, leaf lettuces are at good buy with steady supplies. Romaine is still high in price but is starting to come down.

Berry News: Due to the recent warm weather strawberries are coming in bruised and soft. Driscoll reports that supplies will improve by next week. The blueberry harvest continues in the Northwest resulting in supplies improving and prices starting to come down. California raspberries production is on the decline. Blackberries will be limited in supply until Mexico begins production.

Fruit Report: California Avocado is in its final week of availability.  We still have some California product available, but we also are carrying Chilean avocados.  As soon as there are any decent Mexican products we will test them too.  Valencia oranges are in tight supplies for the small size (113’s & 138’s) but availability is good on the larger sizes.  Limes are in good supply for most sizes, but small size limes (230’s & 250’s) are having supply issues.  The nectarine harvest is expected to finish this month; in addition, the black plums are now available. Watermelons are in good supply and prices are at great buy.  Pineapple supplies are good and prices are steady.   Cantaloupes and Honeydews are in good supply and prices are firm (check out this week’s Hot Sheet special on Honeydew)  New crop California Bartlett pears and Granny Smith apples are available for shipment from the San Joaquin Valley.

Vegetable Report: Celery continues to be in an oversupply situation and prices are still at a great buy. Green Bell Peppers are in good supply. Availability has tightened slightly for red and yellow bell peppers due to the transition from the San Joaquin Valley to Central and Southern California coastal districts. Eggplant is in good supply. Cilantro continues to be tight in supply due to hot weather, quality, and issues. Production is slowing; therefore prices will be rising on broccoli and broccoli crowns. Parsley, spinach, kale, leek, green and red cabbage, and Bok Choy are all in good supply. Jumbo yellow and red jumbo onions are starting to come down in price.

As with all fresh fruits and vegetables, the market could change daily . . .
