Tomato Report: The market on Roma tomatoes is starting to firm at higher prices due to fewer acres planted in California. Round tomatoes are in better supply and prices starting to come down. Prices for cherry tomatoes have started to rise, while grape tomatoes continue to be in good supply and at a great buy.

Lettuce Report: Iceberg lettuce is in good supply, and prices are coming down. Supplies have improved for Greenleaf, and prices are steady. Romaine continues to be high in price.


Berry News: Due to the rainfall that occurred in Watsonville, Salinas, and Santa Maria strawberry production was cut and might cause prices to rise later this week. Raspberries are in good supply with prices holding firm. Blackberries and Blueberries are rising in price due to supplies being limited.

Fruit Report: California Avocado season is ending. We still have some California product available, but we also have Chilean as well. As soon as there are any decent Mexican products we will test them too. Bartlett, Bosc, and Stark Crimson Pears are now available. Recent cool weather has slowed cantaloupe production on all sizes. Honeydew and Watermelons continue to be best quality and pricing. Valencia oranges continue to be in tight supply. Limes are in good supply for most sizes, but there continue to be supply issues on 230’s and 250’s. With the harvest 80 percent finished, California peaches will be available through early October. The nectarine harvest will finish early in September. Red plums are expected to be ending soon. Green and red seedless grapes are in good supply. Prices continue to trend higher for California lemons, especially on 140’s & 165’s.

Vegetable Report: Celery continues to be in an oversupply situation and prices are still at a great buy. Green Onions (iced and iceless) and spinach continue to be in tight supply. Good availability on Eggplant. Cucumbers are in moderate supplies and prices are starting to trend upward. Green Beans are in tight supply (check out this weeks hot sheet special on French Beans) Green and red bell peppers are in good supply. Availability is steady on asparagus; prices remain firm. Bunched Broccoli is in plentiful supply and prices are at a great buy. Cauliflower quality is good and prices are starting to trend upward. Cilantro prices have risen due to quality and production issues.

As with all fresh fruits and vegetables, the market could change daily . . .
