Tomato Report: Tomatoes are in plentiful supply for all varieties…round, Roma, grape and cherry. Tomatoes are being shipped from Nogales, San Diego, Central Florida and South Florida. Check out this week’s Hot Sheet special on tomatoes.

Lettuce Report: With growing conditions improving (i.e. moderate temperatures), supplies are increasing and quality is improving for iceberg, romaine and leaf. Occasional internal burn continues to be an issue.   

Berry News: The blackberry harvest in Mexico is winding down, with production gradually increasing in California.  Blueberry production will soon be on the rise, as blueberries will become available in the San Joaquin Valley.  Strawberries are still continued to be harvested in Oxnard, and quality is still good. 

Fruit Report: Late variety Navel oranges are now available. Valencia oranges are currently in good supply, and prices are very good on the small sizes. The lemon harvest transition from the San Joaquin Valley to Ventura County is underway, and prices are trending higher on the large sizes. California grapefruit is in good supply. New crop limes are in plentiful supply on the small sizes while large sized limes are in tight supply at significantly higher prices. Pineapples will continue with good supplies through the month of May. Honeydews from Mexico are in plentiful supply, and prices are on the bottom. Cantaloupes are coming out of Ca., and supplies are great, in addition, sugar content is good. Watermelons from Mexico are in very tight supply. Prices have eased for the middle sizes of Red Delicious and Gala apples; in addition, quality is excellent.

Vegetable Report: Broccoli and broccoli crowns are available in great supply; quality is excellent. Prices have dropped for all sizes of celery, as new supplies have begun production. Mixed vegetable items are in good supply, including green onions, leeks, curly parsley, cilantro, kale, green cabbage, bok choy, snow peas and bunched spinach. Artichokes are in peak season production, and quality is excellent. Spring mix and baby spinach are in plentiful supply, as well as, excellent quality. Red bells are in tight supply, with the new crop harvest just beginning in Coachella. Prices have bottomed out for green bell peppers due to the recent oversupply situation. Zucchini and yellow squash are in good supply.

As with all fresh fruits and vegetables, the market could change daily . . .
