Notes from the Green Grocer -- Nov. 17, 2008

PDF Version of this Document

Specialty: Petite tomatoes are still very limited.  Yellow and Grape tomatoes are still the best alternatives.  Cherries are available and coming out of Chile.  Chantrelle special this week.

Locally Grown:We have locally grown Fuyu Persimmons available from San Diego County. These persimmons are the perfect item to enhance any holiday dish.  Item #4191 going for $25.

Tomato Report: Market is hot and taking off.  Be on the lookout for higher prices this week with all tomatoes.  The only exception is Roma tomatoes with the sizing, quality, pricing holding firm still

Lettuce Report: We are still in transition from Salinas to Yuma, so we are still seeing poor quality in Redleaf, Romaine, and Greenleaf.  Romaine Hearts and Greenleaf Crowns are still showing good quality.

Berry News: Strawberries are still poor quality with high prices due to recent wind/rain.  Blueberries, Blackberries are starting to come off but still high in prices.  In addition, Raspberries are still high in price.

Fruit Report: Figs are beginning to transition from growing areas, unfortunately quality will be affected.  Mangos are still struggling with fair quality and slightly higher prices; in addition, sugar content is low.  We will be seeing the ending of the Tuscan melons.  Cantaloupes have low sugar content, but Honeydews are a much better deal.  We are starting to see the beginning of Satsuma Tangerines but quality is fair in this early stage.  Passion fruit is very limited.  Pineapple is still a great deal with high sugar content.  We still have plums, but will soon be ending.   We are now in full swing with Mexican Avocados.

Vegetable Report: Zucchini and Yellow Squash are still high.  Supply is limited, with prices being extremely high.  In addition, Spaghetti Squash is still high in price with short supply.  Be on the look out for Sugar Snap Peas and Snow Peas, prices are high with tight supply.  Gold Bell Peppers are still holding but we are seeing some spikes in prices. Cucumbers are still in a high market, but a good alternative would be the English Hot House Cucumber.  Broccoli market is coming down, we will be having a special on this week’s Hot Sheet.  In addition, Asparagus is coming down.

As with all fresh fruits and vegetables, the market could change daily . . .
