Notes from the Green Grocer -- Nov. 11, 2008

PDF Version of this Document

Specialty: Petite Tomatoes are very limited on all varieties including Baby Heirloom, Sweet 100’s and pears. Baby squash is getting better but prices are still high.

Stone Fruit:We have locally grown Fuyu Persimmons available from San Diego County. These persimmons are the perfect item to enhance any holiday dish.  Call your sales rep Today!!!

Tomato Report: Market is hot and getting much higher.  Be on the lookout for higher prices this week with all tomatoes.  However, the only exception is Roma tomatoes with the sizing, quality, pricing holding firm.

Lettuce Report: Leaf lettuces such as Romaine, Greenleaf, and Redleaf are transitioning from Salinas to Yuma therefore there could be some quality issues.  Romaine Hearts and Greenleaf Crowns are being processed up north so the quality should remain good.

Berry News: It looks like November will be a bad month for berries particularly strawberries.  With growers in transition from Watsonville to Florida quality is poor, and prices high. Blueberries are coming out of Argentina and Chile, while Blackberries are coming out of Mexico, in addition, to Raspberries coming out of Mexico as well as California.

Fruit Report:Only available are Mexican Avocado’s.  Melon market is very high.  Local melon deals are finishing up and we are starting to see our melons coming out of the desert region such as Arizona or New Mexico. Prices on cantaloupes are taking off.  Honeydews are still a good buy for this week.  Citrus market is seeing the ending of Valencia, and Naval starting. Pineapple is sweet and plentiful.  All grapefruit is coming from Texas, and quality is good.  Mango is still a challenge as we transition into Ecuador crops. Plums are still available but will most likely finish up by this week.

Vegetable Report: Onion prices should be stable for the next few weeks. Cauliflower market has leveled, leaving good supply.  Asparagus is in good quality with prices being stable. Keep an eye out next week for a special we will have on Asparagus.  Cucumbers are starting to take off.   Supply is good but the demand from the East coast will start to drive market up.  Celery market is steady, wtih Salinas harvesting but is coming to an end but Santa Maria is starting to take full swing.  Red and Yellow Peppers are steady, but Green Bell Pepper are taking off due to the increase demand from the East Coast. There are cheaper, small peppers available, but we will not buy since they do not meet our spec’s. Broccoli market is starting to come down. We are still seeing some size and quality issues come out of Salinas and Santa Maria.

As with all fresh fruits and vegetables, the market could change daily . . .
