Specialty: Baby Veggies: Prices are strong on French beans, yellow wax beans, and baby squashes; supply is still very short; chanterelle’s, porcini’s and morel mushrooms are all available now. Rambutan, lychee nuts, and star fruit are available.…


Stone Fruit: California Peach and Nectarine sizes are getting good; Saturn peaches are also here; Apricots and Cherries are also looking very good. California Plums have started but are very small; they need a little more time…

Lettuce Report: There is not much change on Iceberg and Leaf pricing; quality is recovering very nicely from the recent heat waves in the Salinas fields....

Berry News: Strawberries; No change in prices; quality is excellent. Blackberries, Blueberries, and Raspberries are in the same situation; quality is very good and prices are very attractive; now is the time to promote summer fruit…

Fruit Report: Apples and Pears: Some varieties are finished for the season; supplies of Granny, Red Delicious, and Bartlett’s are adequate. Avocados: Availability of California fruit is good; prices are up slightly. Bananas: Growers are beginning to recover; prices are off slightly. Citrus: Coachella Valley Grapefruit is in full swing; Mexican Valencia oranges are finishing up and California fruit is getting better daily; Limes are plentiful and cheap. Grapes: Quality and sizing is improving and prices are coming off. Cantaloupes; Pricing remains low but quality is a real issue; Mexican fruit has sugar but is soft and over ripe while new crop Arizona and California fruit is solid but low in sugar; we are trying to get the best but it continues to be a problem; Honeydews are unchanged; mixed melons are here including Santa Claus, Orange Dews, Crenshaw, and Galia’s; Watermelon prices are low. Both Maui and Costa Rican fruit are here....

Vegetable Report: Artichokes: Growers were forced to strip the thistles due to extreme heat; as a result chokes are short, quality is poor, and prices are up; supply will be hit and miss for the next 3 – 4 weeks. Asparagus: Prices are down with the influx of Mexican grass; jumbos remain short. Blue Lake Beans: Mexico is finishing; prices are up. Broccoli and Cauliflower: Supply is very light; prices are heading back up. Brussels Sprout: Supply remains light; prices are high. Celery: Quality is still a concern; prices remain high. Cabbage: No change in prices. Carrots: Prices are unchanged. Cucumbers: Quality is good; prices have a stronger feel; Hothouse cucumbers are up. Eggplant: Coachella eggplants are here; prices are firm; Coachella Japanese and Chinese are very nice too. Onions: Brown, red, and white onions prices are unchanged. Peppers: Green is short and prices are firm; Gold Bells and Red Bells are better; prices are low. Straightneck is very short; prices are high; Gold Zucchini is a better alternative. Green Zucchini is in short supply; quality is very good but prices are very strong...

As with all fresh fruits and vegetables, the market could change daily . . .
